Portrait Questions
Commissioning art is a big decision. What if I don't like it?
Have no worries. I work closely with the client throughout the process. The client has the opportunity to review sketches before painting begins. Toward the end of the process, we work together on the final touches. I want my clients to be completely satisfied with their painting — and then tell all their friends! If you like my painting style, I'm confident you'll like your finished art. However, at the end of the process, if you are not satisfied with the results, I will refund your deposit. See my guarantee page for more information.
Can you paint a portrait from one of my photos?
I prefer to use my own photography for reference, combined with life study — if feasible. There is more to painting a portrait than simply copying a photo. The art of portraiture is a process of capturing someone's persona, their character and mannerisms. It helps to meet the person, spend some time with them in a painting or drawing session and then take my own reference photos that show the subject in their best light.
Does that mean you won't do a posthumous portrait?
For a posthumous painting, I must work from existing photos — studying whatever photos are available. I then learn some of the history of the subject through the client, or other sources. I also may have a live model stand in for body and clothing reference.
Are your portraits computer-generated or altered photography?
No! My paintings are original creations of paint and canvas — the old-fashioned way. There is only one original, and it contains the spontaneity and perspective of an artist combined with the vibrancy and texture of the medium (oil and canvas, or charcoal/graphite and paper).
How long does it take to deliver a commissioned portrait?
The entire process usually takes between 4 and 6 months to complete. I make every effort to accommodate any deadline if possible, but portraits are not created overnight. The time required varies according to a number of factors which may include the following: client and/or subject availability, artist's schedule, scope and size of the painting, and client requirements.
How long did it take to paint that?
This is a common question and even one that I ask myself sometimes. The answer I often give is "a lifetime." It has taken a lifetime of study to get where I am today and, of course, I'm still learning. A more specific answer, however, is that each work of art is different and offers new challenges. I take as long as I need to deliver my best, but a head & shoulder size painting will likely take between 20 and 35 hours of painting time, plus whatever travel and meeting time is necessary.
Is the frame included?
I do like to present the finished painting with a frame when possible, but for oil paintings, the frame is not included in the quoted price. I can purchase a frame for the client if they prefer, or work with them to choose a frame. For charcoal drawings, I do include a frame in the price. The client can choose from a few different framing options. This way the delicate drawing is protected and can be enjoyed immediately. Of course, the client may always choose to reframe later should they wish.
The landscape and still life paintings do come with the frame pictured on the web site.
